The Pico Projector Popularity Contest

by pico-admin on July 16, 2009

tech-puzzleI’m sure you are aware of how new Pico projector technology really is. What you may not be aware of is the popularity contest that faces any new technology as it comes out into the world.

Whether it’s pico projectors or cell phones, it really doesn’t matter. They are all in a race for one thing. And that is to be the next “big thing”. So much so that companies spend millions of dollars trying to get their product into the people’s hands. So that they can in turn fall in love with it.

At this point in the pico projector race I’m fairly sure the goal for most of the manufacturers is to get into top position before Christmas. If they can get some real play by the holiday season it will send their sales through the roof. Which is my prediction this year. I think that pico projectors, both stand alone and embedded into other devices, will be one of the big gifts this year.

Can it get out there in time? I honestly don’t know. The technology is so new that even uber geeks are not familiar. I asked one of our coders the other day if he knew what a pico projector was and he just shrugged. When I explained to him that it was a micro projector that could be embedded into small electronics like cell phones, he said that he had in fact heard about them, but couldn’t really put his finger on where.

So it’s early in the race. The popularity contest if you will. Because that’s what it’s going to come down to in the overall sales. It’s going to be who has the most exposure, the best projector, the lowest price and the most fans.

Samsung, Sony, Optoma, AAXA, Acer, Toshiba, Dell, and many other top companies are in the ring. Ready to duke it out for the title of king of the pico projectors. Can the smaller companies win? Maybe. But only if they put out a superior product.

My biggest worry if I were one of the smaller pico makers is if Apple is in the process of building their version. Even scarier, do they have plans of offering a Pico inside the Iphone anytime soon?

Who knows. But it will all play out this Christmas.

Luckily, you and I get to sit ringside for the show.
