I was cruising the news feeds this morning and going over all the alerts for Pico Projector stuff, when I came across a writeup on TechRadar.com
It’s something we Pico lovers already were aware of, but they are predicting an increase in sales and production of pico projectors by 600% in the next 4 years. Calling them “The Next Big Thing”.
Here’s a clip:
Pico projectors built into our favorite devices are set for a six-fold increase according to analysts iSuppli – who predict that shipments will rise to three million by 2013.
Although pico projectors remain a small market currently – with shipments of around half a million, iSuppli’s prediction is that being able to project a big screen from a small device will become increasingly popular.
I’m not sure their estimates aren’t a little short though. I’m betting that there are more than half a million pico projectors that will ship this year. Especially with Nikon’s announcement a day or two back. Pico projectors are going to be big THIS Christmas, though not nearly as big as they will be next year and next Christmas. It’s still early in the game and people simply aren’t aware that this technology even exists yet.
But they will. Very soon. Understand this. Big companies, HUGE companies, are working on adding PICO projectors to their mobile devices, cell phones, cameras, etc and they are going to spend millions of dollars promoting them. So even though the public at large doesn’t have a clue as to what a pico projector is now, they’ll know by next Christmas, I guarantee you.
600% increase? I have to predict that number is too small. I’m going to say it’s probably double that in the next five years. If Apple, Sony, Blackberry, Samsung, Toshiba, Dell, and other electronic giants get into the mix, it’s liable to be a lot bigger than anyone expected.
Which is my hunch.

I went and checked out the report from iSuppli, and it doesn’t claim a six hundred percent increase, it predicts a SIX THOUSAND percent increase. The numbers in my post before were incorrect, mostly because I based them on another tech blog I read. What iSuppli really said is that this year 50,000 units are expected to ship, and that by 2013 they expect that to jump to over 3 million pico projectors. Making that a 60 times jump, or 6k percent increase.
Their report is unclear as to what it includes, if it is for just the stand alone pico projectors, or for other electronic devices that have a pico integrated. (Cell phones, Cameras, Ipod Touch, etc)
I still stand by my original post though, I still think this projection is pretty conservative and low.
But we’ll see in 2013, won’t we???

Are they going to be the next big thing? Another indicator might say yes. Recently Buy.com put a shipment of these babies on sale and they sold out in minutes. Sure, they pimped them at a bargain basement price, but if nobody wanted them, they sure wouldn’t have sold them like they did.
But they sold like hotcakes.
Yup, the pico projector revolution is coming boys and girls, coming soon!
