Sometimes in this job you find yourself laughing with glee at the ingenuity of new technology. Somebody takes an existing concept and marries it to the cutting edge to create a gadget that surprises and delights.

Nikon_coolpixNikon has pulled it off with the S1000pj camera. Those little letters at the end of its name don’t stand for pajamas (well, that was my first guess) but, wait for it, projector.

Yes, something which until recently was as big as a loaf of bread now fits inside a camera. How cool is that? It’s down to a new breed called pico-projectors that will soon see everything from mobiles to MP3 players capable of throwing a big image onto a nearby wall.

You can already buy standalone pico-projectors that connect to, for example, your iPod or laptop. But Nikon has become the first manufacturer to incorporate one into a compact camera.

Posted by: Olga Kharif on December 09

Later in December, AT&T will offer LG eXpo smartphone with an add-on pico projector that clips right onto the device. In November, Sparkz Products released its expensive pico projector for the iPhone; the device balances on a tripod stand. Microvision has recently announced that its pico projector design will soon debut in Asia. Indeed, 2010 just could be the year when such video accessories for smartphones will come out in droves, says Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD Group.

With the devices finally out, what remains to be seen is whether they catch consumers’ eye. Consultant In-Stat recently forecasted that pico projectors will turn into a $1.1 billion market by 2014.

fujitsopicocameraIt’s finally happened. Ever since the first ultra-tiny pico-projectors started to hit, I’ve been waiting to see one stuck on a smartphone. Now, according to Akihabara News, Fujitsu is about to make this wonderful dream a reality. At least for people who live in Japan.

The F-04B is like no smartphone you’ve ever seen. It’s modular, and consists of up to three layers that slide together to make a Bluetooth-connected smartphone sandwich. This device has a display unit with a 3.4″ touchscreen and a keyboard unit, each with its own Lithium-Ion battery. The full QWERTY keyboard can be removed, allowing you to use the phone as a thin touchscreen device. On its own, the keyboard acts as a microphone, speaker, and gamepad.
